The Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) region is bursting with business growth. Currently the eighth largest economy among nations, it's soon expected to overtake cities like Chicago in population—and for good reason. The lack of personal and corporate taxes, as well as access to major transport and Texas’ renowned universities, give businesses plenty to love about the Lone Star State.

But there are only so many resources to go around. Competition will get more challenging as Dallas continues to grow. With such an influx of new talent, how can leaders attract and retain the personnel they need?

Providing people with convenient and amenity-heavy workplaces isn't enough to win people over. Those simple perks don't always translate to cultivated communities or increased employee satisfaction. As a result, employees are left with little incentive to work outside of the comforts of home. Instead, we must adjust our focus and prioritize design that provides a sense of belonging and connects people to the space’s mission, getting talent excited to engage with your workplace long term.

Before joining PDR, much of my 22-year career in Dallas centered around design solutions for the workplace, hospitality, and multi-family sectors. These industries recognize that creating spaces focused on connection and belonging provides a competitive edge for organizations while fostering community for their people.

PDR’s similar approach initially attracted me to the firm. Hospitality prioritizes ROI, leveraging design thinking that encourages repeated visits by deeply connecting people to a space’s mission, values, and purpose. Historically, the workplace sector has overlooked these objectives, focusing more on the practical functions of its spaces. While that has been the status quo, the times and expectations of those who use the spaces are changing.

By emphasizing comfort, collaboration, efficiency, and flexibility, hospitality-driven environments ensure people feel like they’re truly at their home-away-from-home. This is opening a new opportunity in design for Workplace Hospitality.

Decision-makers can't rely on assumptions when making these critical choices, as investing in spaces that don't resonate with people can be detrimental. No one can afford to waste valuable resources on a space that fails to attract and engage those it's tailored for. Though the risks are abundant, no organization needs to rethink its approach to Workplace Hospitality alone. Instead, businesses should seek to minimize risk and maximize return by leveraging partnerships with experts who understand the value of infusing a hospitality mindset into spaces. At PDR, our design philosophy is holistic, human-centered, and iterative, allowing us to provide our clients with comprehensive solutions that prioritize people through hospitality principles. With three offices across Texas and a multidisciplinary team of experienced creators and problem solvers, we bring a collaborative approach to projects regardless of location.

As organizations seek to bridge the gaps between people, place, and purpose, leaders must remember that successful spaces are magnets, not mandates. With so much potential, this is the time for businesses to find a design partner and invest in their spaces.
